The Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar decided to start BDS course in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences & Research, Sri Amritsar in the year 1992 by constituting a Trust namely Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust which was formed on 15.12.1992. Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar was also started in the year 1997 under the control of Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust, Amritsar. The Punjab Govt. accorded necessary sanction for start of BDS course with intake capacity of 60 students in this Institute and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar granted affiliation to it.

First batch of 60 students was admitted in 1992. Now, this institute is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot w.e.f. 1.7.1999. Subsequently Dental Council of India accorded its recognition for BDS degree to be awarded by Guru Nanak Dev University., Amritsar from the year 1996 and Govt. of India also recognized the same vide Govt. of India Notification no. V-12017/7/94 – PMS dated 18.8.1998.

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar also stands recognized by Medical Council of India vide letter no. V-110015/7/2002 ME ( Policy I ) dated 23.1.2003. All the medical subjects are being taught in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar . The building of the institute is one of the best building in India and is located at G.T. Road , Amritsar (Punjab). After obtaining necessary affiliation from Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot and with permission of Central Govt./Dental Council of India, New Delhi this institute has already started MDS course in 6 specialities viz Conservative Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics, Pedodontics, Periodontics and Orthodontics from the session 2015-2016. First batch of M.D.S students has passed out with 100% result. For the recognition of M.D.S degree, D.C.I/ G.O.I have already taken positive steps in the matter.

LAND AND BUILD UP AREA

The college building has 6 floors including the basement area and total covered area is 1,05,692 sq ft. The land on which this institute stands, measure 5 acres which was given by Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Amritsar vide its Resolution no. 97 dated 20.1.2003. In addition to it, there is 6.5 acres area in which staff quarters for Doctors and para-medical staff are being constructed and there are playground earmarked for football, hockey, basket ball, volley ball, tennis etc. However, 4 residential quarters are available for Professor, 5 for Asstt. Professor/Reader and 10 for Senior Lectures/Lectures in Dental/Medical college campus.

Detail of Affiliation:

The Institute is now affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot since Sept 1999. Before 1999, the Institute was affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. As all the Medical, Dental, Nursing, Homeopathic and Ayurvedic colleges are attached with Health University at Faridkot, hence its affiliation was transferred from Guru Nanak Dev University to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot.

Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust, Sri Amritsar which run Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences & Research is also running Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research here at Amritsar. The Dental Institute is affiliated with the Medical Institute which is situated approx. 6 k.m. from Dental Institute in the outskirts of the city at village Vallah . This Medical College is recognized by Medical Council of India by MCI since 2001 and also runs Postgraduate courses in 20 specialties with 100 MBBS seats annually.
