The department is situated at the first floor of the college and consists of a clinical wing and an academic wing. The clinical wing is situated on the left side of the building and comprises of the OPD, minor OT, septic OT and the major OT along with the offices of the academic staff. The academic wing is on the right side and houses the seminar room and the post graduate students room. There are separate sections for graduate and postgraduate students. The postgraduate section has independent fully equipped cubicles for each student.
The aim of the department is to provide high quality student teaching, patient surgical care, basic and clinical research. The department on an average, treats about 1500 outpatients every month. There is also an excellent operating theatre, recovery area, post operative ward, intensive care unit (ICU), and a 20 bedded in-patient facility which is supported by laboratory and imaging facility for all routine investigations.
The department is one of the major centers for the management of craniomaxillofacial trauma and also holds the privilege of being the only maxillofacial surgery centre in a dental college to provide treatment for head and neck cancer patients and reconstructive surgery in north india.

Graduate Training Program
The program is known not only for its approach to teaching but for the wealth of clinical experience afforded to each student. Undergraduate students and interns are trained in exodontia, preprosthetic procedures and wiring techniques for maxillofacial injuries on cast models. As a part of their curriculum interns have to present atleast one seminar on a topic related to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Students are also trained to assist the faculty in minor oral surgical procedures, so as to enable them to perform minor procedures independently.
Post Graduate Training Program :
The goals of the post graduate training program are to prepare the residents academically and surgically in order to complete the certification examinations of the Dental Council of India. The purpose is also to foster an attitude of critical enquiry, intellectual self renewal; to stimulate the desire to deliver ethical, compassionate and effective health care services; to develop surgical expertise, diagnostic acumen and patient management skills that will enable the resident to persue an academic and/or practice based career in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The three year course of study is designed to integrate the biologic basic sciences into progressive clinical training. Post graduate students are expected to become competent in overall patient management including physical diagnosis, fluid and electrolyte administration, medication, interpretation of laboratory data etc. Supplemental training includes cadaveric dissection of the head and neck in the department of anatomy, and allied basic sciences including physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology. Special clinic postings include rotational duties at SGRD Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, in the department of anaesthesia, medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, oncology and emergency.
The post graduate students gain extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of oral and maxillofacial problems on both inpatients and outpatients. They are trained to assist major surgical procedures and to perform minor oral surgeries under the direct supervision of the faculty members.The training includes exposure to a wide spectrum of surgeries performed for : impacted teeth, dentoalveolar problems, dental implants, maxillofacial trauma, maxillofacial pathology, temporomandibular joint , facial pain, orthognathic problems, oncology, reconstruction and many other aspects of head and neck surgery.
The training program also includes the submission of a library dissertation and a research thesis before the final examination. The product of these efforts is expected to be research papers submitted to journals for publication and abstracts for presentation at professional meets and conferences.
